Middlemarch by George Eliot
3.0
I reluctantly started reading Middlemarch with my book club. I never had a desire to read this one; I'm not that into Victorian literature. However, I was quickly drawn into the book. I liked the style and quality of writing and the story lines moved at a fast pace and were kind of fun. But then, a couple of hundred pages in, it started to become a slog. I almost gave up and put the book back on the shelf. But, pressure from my book club, mixed with the desire to check off another highly respected classic, made me continue. And I'm glad I did. The last few hundred pages were great! So many twists and turns and fast paced goodness. Most of the story lines were predictable but it was still fun to see how she delivered you to the end. I hold my ground in thinking that she could have seriously benefited from an editor (did they even have editors in the mid/end 19th century?). Right now, I have to give this a strong 3 stars...not quite enough love to bump it up to 4 stars just yet. Maybe after I have time to reflect a bit more I'll change my mind.
