i so wanted to give this book 5 stars. and it really is very good. this is one of those books that yes, has many of the tropes that are common to genre novels, but i think they're all done so well that it makes them feel new and exciting whether or not you see them coming. the main characters have dealt with dark shit, and i think that part of the story is handled with the respect and seriousness it deserves. and yet this book also made me laugh out loud on multiple occasions. all of the characters, including the side characters whose heads you're in maybe once, felt very real and distinct from each other, which i loved.

i couldn't quite give it 5 stars only because i think the ending doesn't quite land, mainly due to the very grave plot point that causes that final climactic miscommunication not being perhaps as impactful during the epilogue as i think it should have been. that was the only time where i felt the serious nature of the plot point was handled in a way that felt too lighthearted, perhaps, and it didn't settle well with me. but overall this was a really great book that i'm so glad i picked up.
