you can definitely tell that this is Morrison’s first novel, but the fact that it’s still a 4.5 star read is very telling of her talent as a writer. at times, she can be heavy handed with her messaging. but, ultimately, it doesn’t take value from the book at all. it’s a harrowing subject matter that she doesn’t let you look away from, but it’s also handled masterfully. truly a top class author right here.
