The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
5.0
Intrinsic and insightful, The Outsiders should be mandatory reading for all emerging adults.
Hinton did exactly what we hope to do as writers- write the book we want to read.
In a blunt and slightly brash way she acknowledges just how capable, powerful, and resilient teenagers can be. Teenagers are so often brushed off as childish or incompetent.
I assure you that you will not feel that way after reading this YA novel.
Ponyboy, his brothers, and friends know exactly how cruel and yet beautiful the world can be. They know their labels- and living on the wrong side of town they know that everything will always be their fault. They know that the Socs won’t be held accountable which leads to life altering choices.
Hinton doesn’t skip a beat knitting the fictional world of the greasers and Socs with powerful worldly observations.
