It is an art to feel throughout the whole book that you don‘t know the character just to realize at the end that all along you were learning about him when he was observing others. 
There was this distance to the main character although it was narrated in form of a diary. You always felt an invisible wall between you and this character. You saw the world through his eyes but you never have seen him.
