The way Helen Dunmore weaves real-world challenges into a story about mermaids and an enchanting ocean is masterful.
The characters are dynamic and grow and develop in unpredictable ways… just like real people do.
The sincerity of Dunmore’s writing and characterisation is just as intense as it is enjoyable. She has something to say, and like Faro smiling knowingly at Sapphy, Dunmore trusts we’ll understand the clues she leaves in her prose and knows we’ll eventually gain a powerful understanding of the relationship between land and sea.
An addictive series that deals with earthly challenges like climate change, over fishing, and human destruction, while also addressing human challenges like grief, family dynamics and childhood adjustments.
An absolute masterpiece and I can’t wait to read more of the series.
