Good god is this book terrible. The premise is interesting but here's the catch--nothing ever happens. Characters don't develop, the "plot" (picture me doing sarcastic air quotes here) drags in places then completely skips almost entire years. Anything that might seem interesting is quickly forgotten in favor of pages upon pages of drunken, meaningless sex.
Instead of being a quirky, fresh homage to Harry Potter, Narnia and LOTR, it's a rehash of the most forgettable, boring parts of each book.
And, for godssake, lev grossman, it's clear you are able to use a thesaurus but using obscure words doesn't make your book enticing or smart. It just makes you look like a pompous asshole.
