This is 100% not a book I would normally pick up. The jacket blurb was vague and while I enjoy plague and the burning times historical fiction (I know, those are some specific and weird sub-genres) I don’t normally go for abby/nun/Christianity historical fiction but guess what, I did!
This book is remarkable and has so much going on as well as so many interesting characters, mostly all 12-century English nuns and their sapphic spiritual lives. The story itself centers around Marie de France and goes through her life as we meet her after being thrown out of court by Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. Marie rises above it and eventually makes her way to the abbey and the story unfolds from there.
