Moonfleet by John Meade Falkner

4.5

Full of visceral atmosphere, tension, exciting high stakes, a treasure hunt and morally grey characters, written in flowing 19th century first-person epistolary prose, this was hard to put down and really deserves to be better-known. I may have even preferred it to Treasure Island, which I read a couple years ago and gave 4 stars.
Elzevir stole my heart in his unconditional love and support for John the teenage protagonist, despite John's quite frankly dangerous decisions!
There were one or two places where the story slowed down, and a couple of eye-rolling contrivances especially at the end, although those do admittedly make for a satisfying and emotional end
