Letters from Max: A Poet, a Teacher, a Friendship by Sarah Ruhl, Max Ritvo

emotional inspiring sad medium-paced

4.5

A devastating relationship between two poets who knew each other better than many of us know ourselves. I first read Sarah in college where her plays speak to dreamers, dissatisfied with the stuffy material so often pushed on an education in theatre. It's no wonder that Max and his poems were drawn to her tutelage, and later friendship. I learned about this book reading Between Two Kingdoms and I'm so glad I followed the instinct to read more about Max. He leaps off the page as someone you wish you could know better, a wish that only grows stronger as you read their final correspondence.
