Color and Light by Sally Rooney

4.0

“A pain in your throat may get worse when you swallow, may be almost unbearably painful when you swallow, but that doesn’t mean that the pain is gone when you’re not swallowing. Yes, life is full of suffering and there’s no way to be free of it.”

Sally Rooney always has a magical way of writing her stories. Every single time. Beautiful, atmospheric, captivating. This woman has charmed me with her words once again.

Color and Light is a short story about Aidan and Pauline, both polar opposites yet also similar to one another. We follow the story of the first time they met leading up to the “now” which is the ending. They’re both lonely despite being surrounded by a lot of people everyday, however, with each other, it felt like they’re not so lonely anymore and that they silently understood each other despite their differences.

This one ended on sort of a cliffhanger and I honestly wanna read more. I want this one to turn into a novel fully, I’d love to see that. I just need to know more about Aidan and Pauline. Declan too. It felt like we’re only getting a part of a longer story (I know it’s a SHORT story okay, I am aware) and that there’s more after the ending and also more before the beginning. SALLY ROONEY CAN KEEP TORTURING ME AND I’D STILL GIVE HER MY MONEY AND SOUL HONESTLY.

I feel like Aidan hasn’t fully warmed up to Pauline yet in this story and that each of their character development could’ve gone more far. Like I said, I need more of this story really. But as always, stunning writing by my queen. Highly recommend everyone give this story a read whenever you have some free time, IT’S REALLY SHORT
