The Ottomans: Khans, Caesars and Caliphs
by Marc David Baer
For someone like me, with a burgeoning interest in history who has not read anything about the ottoman empire before, this book was a lot of fun! I throughly enjoyed the the scholarship of Baer who takes you through different aspects of this vast empire, from chronological details to in depth explorations of ottoman harems, gazis and more recent political forces and genocides.
I also enjoyed how the story covers a vast time period, going from 1200AD to the WWI ottomans. It removed any sense of chronological snobbery from me as I began to see people in the past millenia as more similar to me and the gradual shifting of ideas and worldviews.
This is a slightly academic but also accessible to the public read and was a lot of fun!
