The Story of Mankind, Original Edition (Yesterday's Classics) by Hendrik Willem van Loon

funny informative relaxing medium-paced

4.0

An ambitious take on Western Civilization for children. While I'm not sure what child would read this 500 page tome in its entirety, the approachable illustrations and jovial tone might draw young history fans in for a chapter or two.

I found the writing style relaxing, however, the narrative should be viewed as a window into the 1920s perspective of history, not as historical cannon. In fact, the author apologizes for his own bias, speculates how his grandchildren might someday view history, and admits that his account is fallible.
