Spring Snow
by Yukio Mishima
Really beautiful, wildly vivid character development, supremely satisfying depiction of self-inflicted destruction through a very distinct lens of young male obstinacy and hopelessness. Rife with philosophical musings that are sometimes more compelling than the narrative, and, of course, overflowing with cultural and environmental distillations of time and place. In most respects I think this deserves more than 4 stars flat, but to be painfully honest, the slow tempo and believable-yet-infuriating webs of decision-making were, for me, often a slog.
Nonetheless, this is something special, and I intend to make my way through the remainder of the tetralogy, perhaps just with some faster-tempo works in between each entry.
