I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy
5.0
challenging emotional funny hopeful inspiring reflective sad fast-paced

What I really loved about this  is that it almost reads like a fictional story. Rather than being an entirely retrospective account of her life, Jennette writes from the perspective of herself at the age at which the events occurred. When you read about her childhood, you feel as though you’re reading the direct account of a child, including her childlike thought process and blind adoration for her mom at that time. When you read about her adolescence, you experience the growing disillusionment and dissatisfaction with both her acting career and her relationship with her mother right alongside her teenage self. When you read about her young adulthood, you feel the denial and struggle and heartbreak that resulted from all the years prior and how difficult starting that road to recovery was in the moment. This compelling storytelling narrative structure combined with Jennette’s deeply introspective account of her thoughts and feelings throughout her life results in a memoir that is both accessible and powerful.
