Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert
3.0
One sentence summary: The bored and lonely wife of a small-town doctor in 19th century France decides to live freely, taking multiple lovers and spending money she does not have into feeling freedom from the confines of her gender.
I’m not sure what the message of this novel is, other than it must have really fucking sucked to have been a woman in 19th century France (you know, as opposed to now!) Emma was a woman of privilege, so I imagine that being a poor woman sucked even more.
