Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
2.0
2.5 Stars
This was what Twilight should have been. The protagonist was more enjoyable and also, not a total Mary Sue. She was curious, she cared about her friends, she suspected someone and also questioned things. She was reckless, she broke rules. I liked that she was different. While somewhat rude, she was smart, as she was able to question Patch, and when she thought Patch was going to kill her, she wanted to run, unlike someone (cough*Bella*cough)
Other Positives
- The mystery- the story itself is very similar to Twilight, but done better and in a shorter length. In Twilight, the plot comes in the last fifty pages or so, or last half hour of the movie. While the romance is the main point of Hush Hush, a mystery blooms in the story very early on, and continues, which had me intrigued.
Negatives
-Cliche villain- while I enjoyed the mystery, one of the villains felt very stale, more intriguing than James or whatever in Twilight, (I should stop comparing, but they are so similar).
Loose ends- the story, of course being the first book, did have loose ends, I ended up being somewhat confused at the end.
-Patch- I think he is sort of a flat character, though, as he really needs more development and personality, which he lacks right now.
-Story itself- while I enjoyed the mystery and such, I felt it lacked originality, as I said, very similar to Twilight, it needed more creativity. The paranormal side of it needed more development, too, as it mentions parts of the world, but never fully explains it.
-the creepy stalking part- twilight has this, and Hush Hush has this. Creepy stalkers always bothered me in books, and it is apparent in this.
For me, what really saves this story is the mystery in this book. It was done well, and the reveal makes sense when explained. The climax was engaging, too.
