Enjoyed this as a lighter read having just finished the slog that was Dune. Though by reading the blurb you know what's going to show up, it's built up very well with the reveal coming at just the right moment.
Character development is fairly well done, though I found some of the sudden changes the characters go through to be a bit extreme and difficult to believe.
The ending I found to be somewhat predictable, very "Hollywood", and I found myself not quite getting a feel for how it went. Perhaps more than one chapter would have suited it better.
Overall would definitely recommend. Very much a Max Brooks book but a pleasant deviation from the narrative style of World War Z.

Moderate: Gore, Violence, and Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Excrement, Death, Animal death, and Panic attacks/disorders
