I've read several Jane Eyre retellings and this is the only one that really worked. The changes made were clever, and the author managed to stay true to the characters and emotions of the original in a very different setting.
Jane was a delight to read. She's competent, smart, and doesn't whine. Edward is a delightful grump, and I loved watching him soften to her. I'm also very impressed with the reimagining of St John here, his character made even more sense in this context than the original.
It was so refreshing to read a female character who was never a ditz. She didn't trip over herself or say something inane out of nervousness or flutters because she was in love. I so appreciate a woman who doesn't become an idiot when attracted to a man.
