The stakes and the pace are picking up in this second installment of the Gael Song series, another impressively crafted story from Shauna Lawless.

All of the scheming and politics from the first book return and expand. While there is obviously politics and power at play in the world of mortals, we find that the world of the Descendants and the Fomorians are involved in web of politics and power struggles as well, with all three sides converging in the end.

Lawless does a wonderful job weaving descriptive storytelling, political intrigue, mysterious magic, and medieval battles into a near perfectly woven net that manages to capture me every time I sit down in this world. While the start was a bit slow, the second and third acts take off, and I binged the last third of the book.

The characters are multifaceted, the magic is mysterious and dynamic, and the Game of Thrones-esque politicking is top notch. There is just the right mix of fantasy, romance, fighting, and historical fiction that makes this world entirely unique. With some chapters and moments that made me outright gasp, and an ending that has me chomping at the bit to get into book three, I cannot recommend this series enough. On to The Land of the Living and the Dead!
