Haikyu!!, Vol. 01 by Haruichi Furudate

3.0

This was a fun read, and I liked the characters. However, I found it easy to put down as there were consistent breaks in the action as well as some repetition of story beats. The breaks in action often came during matches, when everyone seemed to stand around while two or three characters hashed out an issue. I don't know if it is typical for teams to take long pauses between sets, but that happened frequently.

I enjoyed how this story subverted the trope of rivals by forcing them to be teammates, and appreciated that none of the characters spent their time crying about their failures. Before moving on to the next in the series, I think I will watch the anime episodes for this volume and see if that changes my opinion on the story.
