Head on: A Memoir
by Larry Csonka
informative
lighthearted
reflective
medium-paced
I wouldn't have picked this book up, except that I live in Stow, Ohio, which is Larry Csonka's hometown. I ended up really enjoying it!
It was so funny to read about local things from back in the day. I live blocks from the Ron Marhofer Chevy dealership, as well as the doughboy statue in the center of town that they put pumpkins on. His old dirt road is now a suburban neighborhood behind the high school.
The childhood stories were really entertaining, and so was learning the story of his career trajectory and time as part of the Miami Dolphins championship team of '72. It's not told entirely chronologically but rather jumps around in places, which can be a bit confusing but makes for some good stories. I was definitely laughing out loud in some places.
As a memoir, it's not overly reflective, understandably glazing over his divorce for example, though it does paint a picture of how extreme Shula's training was, the effects of CTE and TBIs on professional football players, and Csonka's thoughts on the legacy of the '72 Dolphins team. The narration on the audiobook was also great.
I wish I could have talked to my dad about this one, he would have loved it.
