4.75 or 5 stars, not quite decided. This was a truly delightful read and I really loved the relationship and correspondence between Iris and Kit. I bought them and their relationship and was rooting for it (though my head does shriek a bit about the too fast marriage part, but in a historical context it’s more the norm). And I’m a huge sucker for stories about journalists and haven’t read that much in fantasy so that was amazing.
I found the people dynamics really fun and intriguing. This felt a bit like reading a WWI book but with some mythical elements and with more equal gender roles.
It did feel a bit fantasy light for much of the book until the end. They mention the gods and mythical creatures involved in the war, but aside from the magical typewriters, until Iris arrives on the war front, the book was pretty free of any magic or fantastical elements—there’s no mention of magical objects or creatures or people. So I’m curious if that will ramp up in the second book of this duology.
