I’m not going to lie, this book was a literal nightmare, and not because it was scary.
I didn’t have high hopes for it, but I honestly did not expect it to be as bad as it was. It seemed like an easy horror to read while I was at a cabin over Christmas, good for setting the mood.
The only mood it set for me was annoyance.
None of the characters were particularly likable, all being an easily defined stereotype. When there was a character with a bit of interest, they were near immediately killed off. Some of the stereotypes were outdated and offensive, like the bitchy mean girl who was given no development aside from being rich and having a boyfriend from the wrong side of town.
The author also had a problem with telling instead of showing, which was incredibly frustrating. Entire scenes were skipped over and we learned about them through a character’s internal monologue. It would have literally been so much easier to show the scene but noooo, we had to be told it.
The first two thirds of the book were pretty good and scary, if I’m being fair, but the last third fumbled it completely. Once the monsters were revealed and given names and a (spoilers) hive mind leader, it just wasn’t scary anymore. The epilogue also sucked to me. The author could have done it in a way that started more suspense and continued the cycle of what was happening but no the creatures were going to take over on a global scale possibly? Okay. Sure.
There were some genuinely good moments and that’s what makes me the most upset. It’s clear this author is good at writing, it just seems like he wants to write stereotypes and not scary creatures.
Hopefully I can finish an actually good book next so I complete my reading goal :/
