Pony
by R.J. Palacio
What a beautifully written story! I literally could not put the book down for the last 150 pages! I marked so many passages that I wanted to go back & re-read again and again. I'd like to share those same passages with my 8th graders but probably won't be able to without getting emotional!
Pony is part historical fiction, part mystery, part coming-of-age story........the characters have embedded themselves into my heart, especially twelve-year-old Silas who converses with the living and the dead.
A passage that I've gone back to over & over comes from p.260:
"Several of the dead soldiers came to sit with me in the train car when I was alone, and told me of their wounds, or their regrets, their sorrows, their joys. Some asked me to send word to their mothers and fathers. Their friends. Their loves. Even when they didn't remember their own names, they always remembered who they loved. That, I've learned, is what we cling to forever. Love. It transcends. It leads. It follows. Love is a journey without end."
