The Appointment by Katharina Volckmer
5.0

Oof… this book is a monologue-slash-stream-of-consciousness with a prose that hipnotizes me, but the themes get heavy and controversial if not blatantly racist and xenophobic. The line between writing complex characters with deep self hatred and crossing into harmful territory is so thin, but to me this book feels like the former. I think the character is intentionally written as flawed, unfiltered and transgressive, spewing internalized hate, cultural disgust and sexual obsession as is often the case in psychological fiction, to portray an individual’s experience with those particular (fallacious) cognitive processes. I think it’s raw, and daring, and poetic; and disgusting. I love books that evoke so many feelings, that cause so much outrage, that move people. Five stars.
