This was a dark tale, poignant and even poetic in parts, it develops an incredible atmosphere of the themes of sin, damnation, salvation, and mercy, drawing out certain religious themes in such a haunting way. I was gripped.

"If it was a guardian angel speaking to her now, he spoke like a devil - he tempted her to virtue like sin."

"You can't conceive, my child, nor can I or anyone - the...appalling...strangeness of the mercy of God."
