Yeahnah, not really for me.
I listened to the audiobook of this one and for a start, the narrator enunciated as such that all of the characters were sort of given the same, stuffy, slightly superior air about them. I’m not sure how old the narrator was, but the way they said some words - especially ‘younger’ ones - felt so abnormal that I was picturing all the characters being in their 40’s. Also, the American and English accents were absolutely appalling. This lady’s voice sounded exactly like the lady who says ‘there’s a better Bref way’ and other miscellaneous ads, it didn’t really connect with characters or the story.
The tension and resolve romantically was far from titillating and there was about as much heat as a 4 year old Kmart toaster. Also, I felt like a proclamation of LOVE was quite premature given the amount of notable emotionally or physically intimate scenes between the two characters.
The workplace plot line was also incredibly mid, though I did enjoy trying to work out if the characters represented people in the authors real life. I think Tilly was probably Taylor Swift and maybe Goldie - Em Rus, but not sure.
Finally, the materialism and constant talk about designer this that and the other was nearly enough to make me turn off at 10%. Tom was a bit of a cretin imo, and I’ve never read a book that uses the words raucous and debautuous with such frequency but inefficiency.
I appreciate that this is the authors debut novel and I’m being rather harsh but it was between not finishing the book and sharing why I didn’t want to finish it. So I chose this option and am hopeful that no one else will agree with me and others will love this book way more than I did.
