Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery by Brom

5.0

I’ve been a fan of Brom for a few years now and was so pumped to preorder Slewfoot. If one thing’s for certain, it’s that the Puritans were terrible Christians and Jesus would be disappointed in them. The Puritans of Sutton are no different. A man in the stocks could be beaten and bloodied and they would do nothing more than chuck manure at him so they could feel closer to god or some shit. I loved looking at the parallels of this society in 1666 and today, how people hid behind “the word of god” to be absolutely terrible human beings.
Abitha is forever my favorite. Her only “sin” was not backing off when men said stupid shit around her. Edward was so sweet and I believe he really did love her. It was disheartening having him cowed by his older brother who was such a good character to hate. You just knew within the first few pages that Wallace was going to get what was coming to him and it was gonna be GOOD. When Abi gave Sutton the witch they all suspected her of being it was poetic justice.
Samson was such a good character. All he wanted was to know who he was and what his purpose was without a freakish opossum toddler telling him who he was supposed to be. He just wanted Abi. He’s a good dude. Proper bean. Getting to where he finally knew what he was supposed to do was a really interesting journey.
The story was so well written and engaging. I loved listening to the audiobook and I may get a physical copy of the book knowing how Brom has a tendency to include his illustrations in them. I’ve already been talking Slewfoot up to all of my friends and I genuinely hope some of them read it because I really loved it. The destruction of Sutton was well worth the wait.
