The Apprentice by Tess Gerritsen

4.0

I think I might’ve liked the Surgeon more than this one. That by no means, mean it was a bad book, on the contrary. Tess Gerritsen is a very descriptive author, so there’s never a point in time where you’re ever confused about what’s happening, especially when they start with all the technical medical talk.

She has an eerily good way about getting into the minds of the characters, especially the UnSubs. Hoyt’s POV always made my skin crawl, sometimes making me forget he’s not real. (Which I think is a sign of good writing)

Yet somehow, I think the author monologues too much. These books don’t need to be as long as they are for the amount of action that happens.

Which leads me to this point: the apprehension of the perp always seems to happen in the last two chapters, after like 25 chapters of monologue-ing and build up—and it goes by really fast. There’s rarely anything dramatic about it, it never feels high stakes enough given the deprived nature of the subjects being hunted. Then the book is over.

I foresee this as an issue that will persist the entire length of this series which will really damage my enjoyment. But I’m hoping not.

There’s also still barely any Isles, this one was mostly Rizzoli, and I hope that changes within book 3 or I might have to quit this series altogether.

The best thing that happened this entire book was probably Jane & Gabriel finally getting together—& I hope they stay together.
