Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt

I read this book to my 9 year-old daughter (and her brothers before her) as part of our history curriculum. It gives an excellent feel for the time in the life of an ordinary family living in the North during the Civil War with all the conflicts and tensions of a country and families in turmoil. At the end of each section for reading each day, my daughter would ask for more. It's not action-packed, but it is interesting and a great way to learn about the Civil War Era.
