Appointment with Death
by Agatha Christie
While we’re teased with Poirot on page one, we don’t get him truly until after page 100. And while that CAN work, this felt more like a padded short story. The pacing was fine, but the repetition of how evil this “victim” was a bit long in the tooth. Characteristic Christie, the elements that would make this stuck in its time are said by the characters, not in the prose, so she skirts by without reducing the quality of the novel. I don’t hate this—but I can’t give it the same 4-Star rank I gave Christies like “The Sittaford Mystery,” “Lord Edgware Dies” and “Three Act Tragedy.” So, I’ll go 3.5 and not round up.
