“The women had a story to tell, even if the world wasn’t quite yet ready to hear it, and their story began with three simple words. We were there.”
This was one of the books that I read non stop for the first ~50% which was in part by the fast paced, action packed, quick character building moments.
And then Frankie and Rye happened. Not only did I catch on that Frankie had good sense with Jamie - but she fell in love with Rye based on his an empty manipulated promise of a future together. BLEH! HE COULDNT EVEN TELL HER THAT HE LOVED HER! I just had a deep gutted feeling that he was going to hurt her… (and the trip to Hawaii just felt so off to me…)
Fast forward -> Frankie returns to the US. Gets spitted on, cursed at, and treated like an enemy in her own country as a returning veteran?? Wthhh? The girl is just SPIRALING! It’s one thing after the next. This is when the plot just PMO. Then Henry the Prince Charming comes along and she recognizes that he’s a good man, loves her, will love her baby, wants to MARRY HER and then Frankie decides b u t her “love” for Rye is strong. She can’t stop thinking about him. Instead of being presumably dead… Rye just so happens to be a POW and returns home. And just so happens to also be married with a child. And also just so happens to be at the Coronado beach where Frankie just so happens to live at. Give me a break. Not only does Rye continue to pursue this affair with Frankie but Rye’s wife MELISSA HAS ANOTHER CHILD??! Pookie… Frankie ofc goes off the deep end. At this point I’m ready to throw this damn book and DNF…
Anywho. I had to vent that as it just annoyed me.
The last 15-20% was chef kiss. I’m glad Frankie got the help she needed. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial scene was so touching. Definitely stared at the ceiling for a moment just amazed.
