Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl

5.0

Beautiful Creatures is the first book in the Caster Chronicles written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stoll. There are currently four books in this series: Beautiful Creatures, Beautiful Darkness, Beautiful Chaos and Beautiful Redemption. The book has had such a big hype, especially lately, as the movie just came out in the United States.

Gatlin was the most boring town in South Carolina, unless that was what Ethan thought. Ethan’s family established there during the civil war and has kept living there. Ethan’s mother passed away last year in a car crash and since then his father has been living inside his studio and Amma have been taking care of everything.
For the last months Ethan has been having really strange dreams where a girl, who he doesn’t know but still love, was dying and he couldn’t save her. When he woke up from these dreams all he could remember was her perfume: lemons and thyme. The first day of school after waking up from one of these dreams he saw a song in his iPod that then disappeared. The song was called Sixteen Moons. When Ethan and his best friend Link arrived at school everybody was talking about the new girl: Lena Duchannes. She was Macon Ravenwood's niece and it made her a freak.
One day Ethan heard the same mysterious song that had appeared on his iPod while he was in class. He followed the sound and it led him to the music classroom where Lena has been playing. There in the music classroom Ethan notice another strange thing, it smelled like Lemons and thyme.
Ethan got to know Lena. However, what made her special wasn’t the fact of being Macon’s niece, it was the fact that her family was a Carter family (kind of wizards). Moreover, she could become a real dark witch in her sixteen birthdays because of the curse going on in her family.

Beautiful Creatures was an absorbing read that lived up my expectations. The book was really well developed as everything that happened, even the tiniest detail was important. If we talk about the characters I think that most of them were fantastic. Ethan, the main character, suffers a big change during the book without stop being himself. On the other hand we have Lena and her continuous obsession with being the American average teenage girl. The Sisters were hilarious and add something really special to the book. Even the bad girl Ridley was and interesting character, as I think she cared more about her family than she said, we could see it in the wither formal defending Lena. We can’t forget about Ms. Lincoln, who was really scary at times, like in Halloween when she appeared at Ethan’s door. I could continue talking about characters for hours because I think they were the ones that make this book so special and good.
However, the book had some flaws. I didn’t quite enjoy how the story about Geneieve and Ethan Carter Wate was developed and brought to the story. Sometimes it got me lost. In addition we have Lena’s “we can’t be together” “I can’t hurt you” attitude, it was so Eduard Cullen (Twilight).

In conclusion, Beautiful Creatures was a dense interesting and not disappointing book. I really recommend it to YA, supernatural romance lovers.
