Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

5.0

It took me so long to pick this book up. I’ve started it a few years ago but i got bored and dnf-it. I thought it was a mystery but this book is much much more.

After reading so many reviews saying how beautiful and powerful this book is i picked it up again. Now that i finished it, and it’s one of my favorites, i can say that giving this book a second try was one of my best reading decisions.

This is a beautiful representation of grief and family dynamics.
It deals with race, gender and family secrets.
With smooth transitions back and forth in time, we see how the Lee family deals with loosing their Lydia. How this affect every member of the family, remembering their last words to Lydia and their struggle with regret and self-doubt.

We read how the father always felt like an outsider because of his race and how this affected his relationship with Nath, his older son.
How the mother had to let her professional life go and how this made her push Lydia to fulfill what she was unable to pursue.
The fine line between helping/supporting a child to achieve something and pushing, is beautifully presented here.

I’ve loved the siblings relationship too, and how the parental favoritism affects the both sides.
How the siblings can have incredibly different experiences with the same parents.

Celeste Ng beautifully wrapped all of this in Everything i never told you.
