Star Wars: Survivor's Quest by Timothy Zahn

5.0

"Survivor's Quest" by Timothy Zahn is one of my favorite Star Wars Extended Universe books for not other reason than I absolutely love how it portrays the relationship between Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade Skywalker. Yes, I know -- I normally don't do spoilers, but if you're reading the Extended Universe in chronological order, than you know that Luke and Mara despite their very opposite backgrounds, recognize their natural connection and then fall in love. "Survivor's Quest" takes place after they've been married about three years, so it's a great glimpse into their continually developing relationship plus the deep respect and love for each other.

This book takes us deep into the Star Wars universe, way way way into Chiss space (Grand Admiral Thrawn was Chiss). The Skywalkers are asked to join members of the Chiss and the Empire of the Hand to check out the remains of Outbound Flight. Outbound Flight was a colony ship that set out 50 years earlier for a journey in to the Unknown Regions. Thrawn destroyed the ship, and now the Chiss have found its remains. When the Skywalkers and the others board the remains, they're shocked to find survivors. Not everyone in their boarding party are who they say they are. Everyone has an agenda, and the Jedi couple will be faced with tough decisions and of course, plenty of lightsaber action.

I love Luke and Mara, and I'm a HUGE Extended Universe fan. This isn't the first time I've read "Survivor's Quest" and it won't be the last. I picked it up to reread this time after I reorganized my home library. These are difficult times in our current world, and I personally find a lot of comfort in familiar reads and characters that I love. And you do not need to read previous Star Wars books to enjoy this one.
