I read this as part of my goal to read a short story every day of 2023.  It was part of the Canterbury Classics' Classic Tales of Horror anthology, but as I had a separate, standalone edition of the book I decided to read it in that format instead.

I don't know what I expected from this book. I had expected it to be a darkly humours book of "man is turned into a giant beetle and is still expected to go to work" since that's the impression the internet gave to me. But that wasn't it at all.

It's more "man is turned into a giant beetle and still tries desperately to go to work so that he can feel useful, and then once he's no longer useful to his friends or family, and is, in fact, a bit of an incomvenice, they treat him like a bug under their heel" which was infinitely sadder.
