a beautiful book that embraces and celebrates a young trans latino boy — a rarely explored demographic in mainstream media — on a journey to acceptance from his family and community. though it reads as YA, i found it gripping and hard to put down, with strong emotion throughout and a beautiful story of friendship and family. i found myself wanting to read the whole thing as fast as possible! i kind of knew something was up with tio about halfway through the book, when lita was re mentioning the jaguar story. though i suspected it was him, it didn’t ruin the rest of the story in any way. i also fully just started crying when i read the passage about julian crossing out yadriel’s deadname and replacing it with his real name :’)
