Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys
4.0

josie moraine is the smart, intrepid daughter of a new orleans prostitute in the 1950s. josie works in a bookshop and lives in a room upstairs to avoid her mother, who is a thief in addition to being a lady of the night. josie dreams of getting away, and saves her money to attend smith college. but when her mom gets involved with a murder and the mob, josie's dreams are put on hold. will she be stuck in new orleans forever?

there's actually a lot more going on than that, and lots of interesting side stories and rich, colorful characters. loved it. another high-quality work of historical fiction from ruta sepetys.
