satsumabug 's review for:
Gabi, a Girl in Pieces
by Isabel Quintero
Really engaging, at times stunning. Even though Gabi's life is totally different than mine at that age, Quintero still perfectly captures the feelings and concerns of adolescence.
On a writing note, there were times when I found the translation/explanation of Spanish words and phrases a bit heavy-handed -- if this were an adult novel I think I'd prefer everything be untranslated (relying on context only), but for YA, this may be the right choice. (I am not taking issue with the use of Spanish; it adds tremendously to the book!)
