The Secret of Nightingale Wood by Lucy Strange

5.0

This book might be perfect. If it has a flaw, I didn't spot it. From the first page I was entranced: I didn't want to put the book down, I wanted to follow every word of the story to the end, and any necessary eating, sleeping or working in between were a pain. It's a short book, but by the end of it I felt as if the characters were old and familiar to me, as if I had been reading about them all my life. The threats to their family life were trully tense - I felt genuine fear for them. At the beginning of the book it isn't clear if there's a supernatural element, or if the character is suffering some kind of mental break down, and it's hard to see any rational explanation, and it all works really well. The hints of fairy-tale woven in bring it all together without overwhelming the story. I have loved every page. Now, I'm off to find out if she's written anything else, and if she has, buy the books asap.
