This Ravenous Fate
by Hayley Dennings
this was one that i was really excited for, so i’m disappointed to say the least. i picked up this book with the intention of binge reading because i thought i would be just that hooked but about 1/3 of the way through i sort of lost interest. so i waited a few weeks before picking it up again.
i think the first act with the set up of the story to come was really promising but i believe the book got worse as it went on. this “harlem renaissance” is never really built on or explored. the world doesn’t exist outside of the Saints and the Harlem Reapers. nobody other than Elise or Layla get any real development. While the romance was my favorite part, I started to get tired of the back and forth of: we’re cordial, okay you betrayed me and i hate you, okay i trust you with my life, we’re cordial again, cyclical nature of their relationship.
by act 4 i was in a constant state of confusion. i kept asking myself okay and how did we get here? there were a lot of reveals that happened in succession with most of them really having no build up outside of 1 or 2 lines prior. i know there’s a sequel in the works that will clear up unresolved plot points but one of them just felt too big to finish the book with no answers.
also felt like there were points were big moments were skipped and just stated afterwards rather than being shown. even one of the biggest plot drivers (the night 5 years ago) is never actually explained in any real detail.
overall, i think the premise was interesting but the execution was lackluster.
