Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
4.0

It's actually a pretty splendid sci-fi book for any age -- it's a solid way to introduce someone to the concepts of agency: who's pulling the strings in your life and what for? How are we being shaped? Is Ender Wiggins's Battle School making him into a killer, or was he already one?

If you've managed to dodge the famous twist, it's a gut punch. But the journey up to the then is a dark, fun, and introspective journey. There are some exciting zero-gravity fights between the schoolchildren -- while the world is on the cusp of an alien race's third invasion. Suffice it to say the last 50 pages jam packs a lot of revelations.

Sometimes though...Card's writing gets a little wobbly. Characters say and do peculiar things that don't matter, sentimentality is jammed into inappropriate spots, and nearly every 10 year old is apparently gifted (which is a convenient excuse for them talking like teenagers). The subplot about Ender's brother and sister feels very shoe-horned. And there's the occasional problematic element ("Rose the Nose").

Golly day though, it's a classic for a reason though. Get your precocious-kid-at-magic-school story and heartbreaking moral dilemmas with space battles right here, folks!
