The Black Box by Michael Connelly
4.0

I’ve always enjoyed Michael Connelly’s Bosch universe. There’s something so dynamic about the scope of the stories, the breadth of intriguing characters, and how everything seems so meticulously plotted out. The old stage adage “Don’t put a gun on stage in act 1 if you don’t plan to use it for act 2” comes to mind. Nothing with Connelly is wasted. Every detail matters, which is why you have to be paying close attention to see where the clues will lead you next.

This particular story is so tightly paced, packed with a ramping intensity you can feel in the pages themselves, as every ebb and flow in the case is tied, almost by a phantom thread, to Bosch’s retirement. Though hanging in the distant future, the pressure to find justice for a long lost victim in time hangs like a scythe, waiting to take him down. It’s a powerful, compelling feeling that helps motivate both Bosch and the readers.

All in all, another excellent addition to the Bosch series and universe in general. I’m excited for the next go around!
