The Tempest by William Shakespeare
3.0
fast-paced

'Hear my soul speak:
The very instant that I saw you, did
My heart fly to your service; there resides,
To make me slave to it;'

I had no pre-conceived notions of this play, so went into it quite blind about its genre and plot, which I think was a good thing. I would say it is most similar to A Midsummer Night's Dream in its jovial presentation of the mystical and magical, and the light-hearted plotting and scheming; yet, it focuses less on the romance and more on themes of servitude and slavery. I think the play can definitely be read as a colonial allegory, and think this would be an interesting path to explore when re-reading and analysing it, looking specifically at the treatment of the character Caliban.
