OMG I highly recommend this in audio form!!
If you want to read it go ahead but it will, in my opinion, pale in comparison to listening to the author read this as she matches the rhyme and rhythm from the print and reads this aloud and you start to nod your head in time, you get wrapped up in the emotion as her voice changes from normal to faint to strong and back, you get sucked into the language as she reads in English and switches to Spanish and back and you hear the accent as her voice wraps around the syllables.

I do not normally read books written in verse, I don't follow poetry, I didn't know this author. I knew I fell in love with the cover and then in love with the blurb. I soon fell in love with Acevedo's voice and natural cadence as she read this to me and before I knew it, this 4 hr audio book was over and I re-listened to it and have related to this book, to Xiomara on such a level that it felt like home.

This book touches on so many themes that are still so very much valid today as they were when I was growing up that it's like there was no time lost. Young girls everywhere are growing up and are having to face the unfortunate reality that there are people in the world that will body shame you in one moment and cat call the next because a body filled out and this leads into self doubt, misappropriate and unwanted harassment that leads into rape culture, that leads into even more body shaming, more self doubt of such proportions and into possible abuse that I worry for all women and Acevedo touched on all of this!

I can't get over how great this book truly is and it blew me out of the water and I really want other people to read this. This is the book that I will push to anyone and everyone of a certain age because of the more mature themes but definitely please read this.
