The Children of Gods and Fighting Men by Shauna Lawless
3.5
3.5 Stars. I want to start this by saying that my star rating reflects my enjoyment, rather than the quality of the book. This book was objectively a fantastic book. It’s well told, well written, and well researched. The characters were really well fleshed out. Lawless knows her stuff, and is very gifted at weaving her story together. I liked the perspectives of two people on opposite sides of a war, and thought the two main POVs were really interesting. I love a strong female lead, and this book had two of the best. Fódla was my favorite, and I really looked forward to her chapters.
All that being said, this unfortunately wasn’t a favorite for me. There was a lot of political maneuvering, which isn’t my favorite thing to read. And while I appreciate the historical elements, I’m learning that I prefer more epic fantasy, with fantastical worlds, magic, and creatures. I do think I’ll continue the series because I’m invested enough to want to know where our characters end up.
