Wowowow Karin Slaughter does it again. This was not quite Pretty Girls level for me, but it’s definitely up there, especially in terms of how messed up it gets. I highly recommend checking the trigger warnings before reading because it does not hold back.

I, however, loved this. I’m a big Criminal Minds fan, and this genuinely felt like an episode come to life. Gritty, intense, and completely addictive (I was SAT trying to figure out what happened, and I STILL got it wrong). I really enjoyed meeting Emmy and Jude, along with the rest of the characters. Emmy is such a layered and compelling lead, and I would absolutely read more books centered around her. I can already picture this becoming a full series.

The timeline is a bit segmented, but I actually liked that structure once I got into the rhythm of it. All you need to know going into this story is the following: this is a story about a police officer named Emmy who is investigating the disappearance of two young girls, Cheyenne and Madison. What starts as a missing persons case slowly unravels into something much darker, and many of the secrets hiding in this small town come to light.

I haven’t really gotten into long crime series before, but I’m completely sold now. I’ll definitely be continuing this one and plan to pick up Will Trent next.

Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
