We Are the Dead by Mike Shackle

Wow.
This book is very very impressive.

Dark, gritty and brutally violent.
Everything I want from a grimdark novel.

This world is bleak and we get to see that first hand from multiple characters on each side of the war. We get to experience how oppressive it is and how hopeless it feels to be ruled by the Egril. And although it seems like all hope is lost, there is a spark. And that spark is very very deadly.

This book is suspense done masterfully. I was sitting at the edge of my seat the entire time. Even the slow moments are tense and anxiety inducing as our characters are always watched, always followed. We feel the fear they live through.

I also love the characterisation in this book. I especially love Tinnstra. She’s very flawed but we go through this journey of self development and watch her find herself and her strength even after losing so much. She may not be the warrior her brothers and father wished her to be, but she is relentless. We watch her fall and get up over and over, finding her own purpose in this horrifying world. And she slowly learns that not all strength is physical and that her need to protect and do good by others is what makes her strong.
Gods, I love this insecure, weak crybaby. I LOVE her.

Why this isn’t rated higher is due to some POV’s in this book that I just find meh. This isn’t a testament to Shackle’s writing but just a personal thing. I didn’t enjoy the storyline I was reading and was unsure of where it was headed. And tbh, I didn’t like the character as much as others. However, this may change for the rest of the series and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the series brings if the first book is this soul destroying.

This book is brilliant.
Fast paced, tense, brutal and utterly epic.
If you are looking for a gritty, gory grimdark series, this one is for you.
