After her mother’s death, Paule moves back to her childhood town and takes over her mother’s chicken farm. She begins writing eulogies for each chicken before she slaughters it to sell at the market. Fowl Eulogies reads like a modern day fairy tale; it is both whimsical and darkly funny. It’s also a moving - but easy to read - exploration of grief, relationships, companionship, consumption, capitalism, and meat eating. Fowl Eulogies is unlike any other book I’ve read, and even though I read it months ago, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. Highly recommend. This was easily a top read of 2023 for me.
